Dr. Tomes provides collaboration assessment and facilitation services and is developing a program to manage generational change in analytic workforces. To build and sustain cultures of collaboration, organizations should have "chief collaboneers." Drawing on decades of research on communication strategies, group dynamics, cultural anthropology, and virtual team building, the Collaboneering approach provides a compelling argument for engineering collaboration into corporate training programs, business practices, and enterprise transformation efforts.
Dr. Robert Tomes offers 1,2, and 3 hour professional development and education sessions on the state of collaboration in the national security community. This training offering builds on Tomes' guide for national security leaders and managers. Topics include: collaboration 101, group dynamics for managers, critical thinking and decision-making, and designing and leading collaboration. Additional sessions on collaboration tools, generational diversity and collaboration, and strategic communications and branding are offered using outside experts to make 1 and 2 day seminars. Collaboration has long been recognized as the cornerstone of great teams, the engine driving successful organizations, and as the catalyst for innovation. Collaboration enables creative talent to co-author best sellers, provides the context and mechanism for individuals to come together as teams, and facilitates the cooperation required for online projects like Wikipedia. The lackluster performance of collaboration tools that have been rapidly inserted into organizations, however, reminds us that no “easy button” exists for collaboration.
Like all processes involving human relationships, collaboration is hard. Creating cultures of collaboration, a new corporate buzz word, is every bit as difficult as creating total quality management cultures, learning organizations, or innovation factories.
